Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall Expansion
Martin-Harris Construction, as part of a joint venture with Turner Construction, provided preconstruction and Construction Manager-at-Risk (CMAR) services for this massive expansion adding 1.4 million SF to the current convention center complex. The West Hall Expansion project is the largest CMAR, vertical construction project in the state of Nevada. The new facility is a three-story building with an exterior curved roof canopy.
There are four major space types composing the interior of the convention facility: the grand lobby (connector), concourses, meeting rooms and ancillary spaces. The grand lobby links the main entrance, taxi drop-off, monorail connector, pedestrian bridge and all the major concourses in the facility. The 675,000 SF, technologically advanced interior exhibit space has a 40-foot height clearance and 270-foot clear span (328,000 SF of column-free space), making it the largest open span convention space in North America. The atrium lobby is 150-feet tall and serves as both a collector and distribution center for people arriving at the convention center. Additional meeting space of 150,000 SF can be configured into 80 breakout rooms. Outdoor exhibit space includes 600,000 SF of exhibit space, 25,000 SF of terrace event space, and 266,000 SF of concourse pre-function space.
Utilizing an extremely aggressive fast-track approach, the project went to Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) at 50% Design Development (DD) drawings, prompting the team to develop a new system of conveying scope. A robust preconstruction process helped to hit budget and schedule goals (just 26 months construction time). The project site was limited, being surrounded by residences, operational businesses, existing convention center buildings and transportation infrastructure. We helped alleviate some of these challenges of working at the site by utilizing just-in-time material and equipment delivery. Complex traffic and pedestrian control coordination was required, especially for the reconstruction of the connector bridge that was built over an active, existing roadway and operational overhead monorail.
